Two Americans studied escalators at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1897, Jesse W. Reno built a ramp-like, escalator-like mobile game at the Coney Island playground in New York, USA. Charles Seeberger purchased a patent in 1898 for the invention of the escalator and, in collaboration with Otis Elevator Company, built the first level escalator in New York State in 1899, with handrails and comb boards. At the Paris Expo in 1900, Sieberg successfully displayed their products under the name of "Escalator" and won a first prize. Otis acquired Siberg's patents in 1910 and bought Renault the following year. In 1920, Otis combined the two designs and became the basic design of today's escalators.
